Thinking Point:
Honouring parents is the path to parental blessing.
As we begin this new week the mighty hand of the Lord will uphold us, enable us and exempt us from all forms of evil this week, in Jesus' Mighty name, Amen.
Our focus this week has been "Honouring All Men", we need to know that Honouring all men is not just men but both men and women in our lives. From our devotional yesterday, we said the first person to honour is God the Creator of all and if we don't honour Him we can't honour men rightly, so, to honour all men starts from honouring God because honouring God is obedience to His word and His words says we are to honour others. So to honour men rightly, we need to honour God by being obedient to His words. Today, our next focus is to honour our parents. Yes, did you notice I didn't say honour God's servant? Yes, our parents are the second god before any other man. Anyone that will not honour his/her parents can't honour all men. For anyone to know how to honour others it is traceable to the upbringing of the parents. So therefore, our parents who enlighten us on honouring all men deserve to be honored as well.
God gave this instruction as a command that we honour our parents with a promise that our days may be long, in order words, if we don't honour our parents it has a negative effect upon our lives. Parents are golden, both father and mother, they are to be honoured in their lifetime. There is no condition attached for honouring our parents either for neglecting or abandonment, either responsible or not, God commands us to honour them for our safety.
Proverbs 20:20.
"20. Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness."
Many say they have reasons to dishonour either of their parents but God said mocking any of them brings darkness upon such. Honouring parents is a right which is not negotiable whether you are raised by a single parent or not, as long as our parents are alive it's our right to honour them.
How do we honour them?
1. By taking good care of them according to our ability. When we are children they did all they could to take care of us, likewise we should do the same when we are of age.
2. Attend to them ahead of others. Jesus said to the Pharisees,
"4. For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. 5. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; 6. And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Matthew 15:4-6.
Whatever belongs to your parents shouldn't be given to anyone else, in so doing, you are honouring your parents.
3. By being obedient to their instructions.
4. Due respect.
Honouring parents is a way to attract blessing and honour to ourselves. Honour them when you have them around and you will be honoured by your children and enjoy a long life.
God Bless you and Good Morning.
