TOPIC: THE HOLY SPIRIT: Criteria To Receive Him (13)
One Year Bible Reading:
Job 36 - 39
Acts 22:22 - 23: 1 - 11.
MEMORY VERSE:
1 John 5:7.
“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”
BIBLE READING:
Acts 10:1-2.
“There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.”
Thinking Point:
Faithful fellowship with God attract the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit, our Helper, is helping us today. He will teach us to profit, speak on our behalf, and intercede for us. He will strengthen us to do good work, in Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Criteria for receiving the Holy Spirit has been our focus, and we discovered that the first step is to be Born Again — accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
When you are Born Again, you receive power for sonship according to John 1:12. You are owned by God. You become His son with sonship authority. You can say, “I am a believer. I am a Christian,” but you cannot live the Christian life effectively without the Holy Spirit.
The second criteria to receive the Holy Spirit is by creating and nurturing a relationship with Him.
Your service as a believer, your prayer life, joining the fellowship of believers, studying God's word and doing good works all draw the Holy Spirit closer to you. You don’t just sit in one place and claim you are Born Again. No. You begin to do the things of God.
Take Cornelius for example. He was a righteous man. He had fellowship with God, prayed regularly, worshiped God, and touched lives outside his home. But he did not yet have the Holy Spirit.
However, his faithful relationship with God made an angel visit him so he could receive the Holy Spirit.
Acts 10:4
“And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.”
The angel made it known that God delighted in his relationship and found it fit to release the Holy Spirit to him. He was given instructions which led to Apostle Peter’s presence.
Acts 10:44
“While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.”
Commitment to the things of God draws the Holy Spirit to believers. It was not prayer alone but Cornelius’ consistent relationship with God as a God-fearing man prepared him. He was practicing what a believer should do. His service, prayer, and good works attracted the Holy Spirit.
During the time of Jesus on earth, the disciples never received the Holy Spirit till He departed but they were committed in doing everything He taught them and the day of penticost came and they were all baptized with the Holy Spirit, Acts 2:1-4.
To be baptized with the Holy Spirit, you must begin to cultivate a relationship with Him:
1. Affecting lives with good works
2. Serving God at your level
3. Praying continually
4. Faithful service in your worship center
The Holy Spirit loves to be with us. He wants to fill us so we can do good work. But we must attract Him through daily fellowship and daily acts that bring glory to God.
God bless you and Good Morning.
