Thinking Point:
It is wisdom to know when to speak of your ability and when to be humble.
From our lesson yesterday, we learnt how David spoke up to challenge Goliath and he was brought before King Saul. There are times we will need to remain silent and humble in the presence of the king and there are times when we will need to speak up about our ability. Although it is good to be humble but not always should we remain humble when the king doesn't know what we can do.
Let's check these two scenarios.
When Joseph was brought before Pharaoh, in Genesis 41, this was what transpired,
"15. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it. 16. And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace." Genesis 41:15-16.
In this chapter, Pharaoh has been pre-informed about the ability of Joseph. He wasn't new to the king, so Joseph needed not to introduce himself to the king. So when the king asked him if he could interpret dreams, he humbled himself by saying, "is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace". Joseph was humbled when he discovered that Pharoah knew about his God's given ability.
In the case of David, nobody knew what he was capable of. No one knew he could hurt a fly, including his brothers because he spent his time with the sheep and in the palace playing instruments. He needed to introduce himself to the king and assure him Goliath is a goner, so humility before the king at that time would have presented him as someone who can't prove himself. He needed to speak up that Goliath will be handled and defeated not with humility.
When the opportunity comes for you to stand before the great, be wise to know what to do, is it to introduce yourself or be humble enough to return the glory to God. David didn't wait for the king to ask him what he could do, he explained what he would be doing to Goliath without any fear. How do you present yourself when you are privileged to speak of yourself? Learn to present yourself rightly.
