TOPIC: Hymn Messages: Take It To God God in Prayer (4)

One Year Bible Reading:

Psalm 70 - 73

Romans 8: 18 - 39

MEMORY VERSE:

Ephesians 5:19.

“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”

BIBLE READING:

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Thinking Point:
Jesus is the best friend to share our pains with — He understands all plight.

As we come to God with the deepest pain in our hearts in prayer, may we experience His relief, grace, and burden-lifting hand over every issue of life, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Our focused hymn today is titled “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” by Joseph M. Scriven.

1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer!

2. Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer!

3. Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge--
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do your friends despise, forsake you?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he'll take and shield you;
you will find a solace there.

This hymn was first written as a poem by Joseph M. Scriven. He was a man who went through deep tragedies. He was engaged to be married to his first love, but the night before the wedding, his fiancée drowned in a tragic accident. Years later in Canada, he fell in love again and got engaged. She also died of illness before they could marry.

Broken and alone, Joseph devoted his life to serving others without charging anyone. He lived very simply. His situation never stopped him from serving God and others. He was known for taking all his pain to God in prayer.

One day, Joseph received a letter from Ireland saying his mother was very ill. He couldn’t travel to be with her, so in his pain he wrote a poem “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” to comfort her.

Years later, a friend found the poem by his bedside when Joseph was sick. They asked him, “Did you write this?” He humbly said yes. It was later set to music and became one of the most loved hymns in the world. Joseph was found dead in Port Hope, Ontario, and the cause of his death was unknown.

Even on his sickbed he had the poem with him because he was still taking everything to God in prayer. No matter how heavy life gets — grief, betrayal, sickness, weakness — Jesus is a friend who will bear it with you.

I don’t know what you are going through presently, but I say to you again: “Take it to the Lord in Prayer”. Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” He is the most reliable friend. Stop trusting in men and put your trust in God. Don’t carry it alone. Take it to the Lord in prayer.

God bless you and Good Morning.
