TOPIC: Hymn Messages: Count Your Blessings (2)
One Year Bible Reading:
Psalm 64 - 67
Romans 7:7 - 25
MEMORY VERSE:
Ephesians 5:19.
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”
BIBLE READING:
James 1:2-4.
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
Thinking Point:
Counting Your Blessings is the secret to enjoying the best God has in stock for you.
This week, we will count gains and not losses. Nothing in our hands will be reduced. No weeping, no crying, and no mourning around our lives and family, in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
We started digging into Hymns this week in our devotional. Every hymn has what propels it. There is always a testimony behind every hymn, and this is what we are studying this week. Today, our focused hymn is titled “Count Your Blessings” written by Johnson Oatman Jr.
When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Refrain:
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, ev'ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.
When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings, money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey's end.
Most times we focus on our losses and not our gains. We are always distracted by what is not working instead of what is working. We give attention to things that give us experience and see them as tribulations, challenges, and limitations. We refuse to see the good in all we have gone through and focus on the bad things.
This hymn shows that, no matter the condition we are in, there is something to be glad about. We are to shift our focus away from the negativities around our lives to the positivities. We may have expectations from God that are yet to be released, but we must focus on what He has done that can be counted.
The third verse says, _“When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;”_ What they have is theirs, and in your due season. Wait for yours while appreciating Him for what He has blessed you with. When we compare ourselves with others we limit what God can achieve in our lives.
In those raging storms, use your past testimony to keep moving. If He has done it before, He will do it again. Encourage yourself and don’t give room for depression and discouragement. When you recount what God has done in the past, He sends His angels to attend to your present situations.
Count your blessings, not your losses. Count what God has done, not what He’s yet to do, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done and what He will do next.
God bless you and Good Morning.
