TOPIC: Hymn Messages: Solid Rock (10)
One Year Bible Reading:
Psalm 89
Romans 12:17 - 13: 1 - 14
MEMORY VERSE:
Ephesians 5:19.
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”
BIBLE READING:
Matthew 7:24-25.
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”
Thinking Point:
Standing on the Solid Rock Means Active Faith in the Face of Opposition
Today, I declare: we will not fail in the face of opposition. Our feet will not sink. We shall stand to the end, in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
Our focus hymn today is “On Christ The Solid Rock I Stand” written by Edward Mote.
In this hymn, Edward Mote declares that when storms, doubts, and fears come, only Jesus is a foundation that will not shift.
1. My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
Refrain:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand:
all other ground is sinking sand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
2. When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
in every high and stormy gale,
my anchor holds within the veil.
3. His oath, his covenant, his blood,
support me in the whelming flood;
when all around my soul gives way,
he then is all my hope and stay.
4. When he shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in him be found:
dressed in his righteousness alone,
faultless to stand before the throne. [Refrain]
Edward Mote woke up one morning with the first line in his heart: “On Christ the solid Rock I stand.” He wrote all 4 verses that same day before going to work.
The hymn stresses that our hope should rest on Jesus’ blood and His righteousness, not on our own works. On a daily basis, our walk should be built on the finished work of Christ. Even when it seems God is far, when we don’t feel His presence, His grace is always available to help us. In every stormy season, He is the Solid Rock to lean on.
This strength is found by believing His Word, obeying His commandments, and following His principles. Jesus said:
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” Matthew 7:24-25
Hearing and acting on the Word of God makes us stable on solid ground. The Word builds faith in us and increases our stamina. Lack of faith makes us stand on sinking sand, while strong faith puts us on solid ground. The fastest way to escape sinking sand is the Word of God.
Those who only hear the Word without acting on it and those who hear and do the Word of God will still face floods, wind, and storms — but only those who hear and do His Word will remain standing on solid ground.
Opposition is normal, but our Faith in God is what puts us ahead of every challenge in life.
God bless you and Good Morning.
