TOPIC: Hymn Messages: Pass me not (12)

One Year Bible Reading:
Psalm 94 - 98
Romans 15: 5 - 13

MEMORY VERSE:
Ephesians 5:19.
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”

BIBLE READING:
Mark 10:47-48.
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

Thinking Point:
Jesus, Don’t Overlook Me in the Crowd. I Need You to locate me.

May the mercies of God locate us, change our situation, and make us a blessing to the world, in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.

Our focus hymn today is “Pass Me Not” written by Fanny Crosby, a blind woman from birth. It is a hymn of desperation — a cry not to be overlooked.

1. Pass me not, O gentle Savior,
hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling,
do not pass me by.

Refrain:
Savior, Savior, hear my humble cry;
while on others Thou art calling,
do not pass me by.

2. Let me at a throne of mercy
find a sweet relief,
kneeling there in deep contrition;
help my unbelief. [Refrain]

3. Trusting only in Thy merit,
Would I seek Thy face;
heal my wounded, broken spirit,
save me by Thy grace. [Refrain]

4. Thou, the Spring of all my comfort,
more than life to me;
Whom have I on earth beside Thee?
Whom in heav'n but Thee? [Refrain]

Fanny Crosby was blind from infancy, but she wrote over 8,000 hymns. She called this one her favorite of her own songs.

Fanny Crosby didn’t write this from a single dramatic event like “It Is Well.” She wrote it from a burden she carried in prayer meetings. While praying with a group of people who came forward for salvation, she kept hearing in her heart the cry: “Don’t pass me by, Lord. Don’t pass me by.”

She went home that night and wrote the hymn immediately. She said:
“It seemed to me that the Lord wanted me to put into words the cry of those seeking souls.”

The interesting part is that the hymn wasn’t for herself, but for lost souls who desire an encounter with Jesus — just like Blind Bartimaeus, who cried out to God among the crowd, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.” — Mark 10:47

It’s a hymn of pleading:
_“Pass me not, O gentle Saviour, I need You to notice me. I need mercy, not judgment. I have nothing else to offer but Jesus.
Saviour, while on others Thou art calling, do not pass me by.”_

I know we may be feeling that we need the Saviour to attend to this area or that area of our lives. I would like us to take this hymn with the same desperation, seeking God’s intervention in our lives. He is not our God so that we can suffer or go through difficult situations. He is our God who wants us free from every circumstance, but we need to show Him that we depend on Him.

Saviour, hear my humble cry this morning. I need You to reach out to me. Regardless of the multitude praying to You daily, do not pass me by today.

God bless you and Good Morning.
