Thinking Point:
Our Worship Is The Proof Of Our Confidence In The Finished Work Of Jesus Christ
This morning, I speak peace to every situation confronting your faith. Whatever makes you question the presence of Jesus in your life is hereby defeated, in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
Our focus hymn today is “Blessed Assurance” written by Fanny Crosby — the same author of “Pass Me Not.” She was a woman blind from birth. It is a hymn of confidence in Jesus, our Savior.
1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long.
2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
angels descending, bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
[Refrain]
3. Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest;
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
In 1873, Fanny was visiting her friend Mrs. Phoebe Knapp in New York. Phoebe was a wealthy composer and pianist. One day Phoebe played a new melody she had written on the piano for Fanny.
After hearing it, Fanny said: “That tune says ‘Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine.’”
Phoebe replied, “Why, Fanny, how did you know?”
Fanny answered, “It was so in my heart.”
Right there, Fanny went to another room and wrote all 3 verses in about 30 minutes. She said the words just “poured out.”
This proves why these hymns are spiritual songs. They are songs given by the inspiration of God. How can someone hear a melody once and give it a title, then compose an entire song to fit it? Above all, she couldn’t see with her physical eyes. Fanny Crosby’s hymns are always deep. This is a level of spiritual growth in God.
This hymn speaks of our confidence and hope in Christ — the assurance that Christ is ours and how secure we are in Him. It’s a hymn that encourages us regardless of what we are faced with. The hymn talks about our submission to His will and the hope of seeing Him face to face. Our submission is the reason for our joy in Him. She went further to say: “This is my story, this is what I enjoy by following Christ.”
When we realize what Christ did for us — the sacrifice and the inheritance we have through His sacrifice — our joy will be unending joy.
She ended the hymn with: “This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.”
All that is written in this hymn can also be our story if we will see and understand Christ’s sacrifice more deeply. There is peace in Jesus despite what we are going through.
God bless you and Good Morning.
