Thinking Point:
Knowing Jesus as our gentle Saviour gives us the courage to approach Him as a Friend.
This week, we will experience the friendship of Jesus in all our endeavours, and have the courage to approach Him.
Our focus hymn today is “The Lily Of The Valley” written by Charles W. Fry.
In this hymn, Charles Fry describes Jesus in a different way — not just as a Saviour, but as a gentle Friend who attends to all who trust in Him.
I have found a friend in Jesus,
He's ev'rything to me,
He's the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The "Lily of the Valley," in Him alone I see,
all I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He's my comfort, in trouble He's my stay,
He tells me ev'ry care on Him to roll;
He's the "Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,"
He's the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.
He all my grief has taken, and all my sorrows borne,
In temptation He's my strong and mighty tow'r;
I have all for Him forsaken, and all my idols torn
from my heart, and now He keeps me by His pow'r.
Though all the world forsake me, and Satan tempt me sore,
through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal;
He's the "Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,"
He's the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.
He will never, never leave me, nor yet forsake me here,
while I live by faith and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I've nothing now to fear,
with His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
Then sweeping up to glory, to see His blessed face,
where rivers of delight shall ever roll;
He's the "Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,"
He's the fairest of ten thousand to my soul.
In the early 1900s, gospel songs often used beautiful nature images to describe Christ’s tenderness, beauty, and comfort. Fry wanted believers to see Jesus not just as King and Judge, but as the gentle, beautiful “Lily of the Valley” — lovely, humble, and available to everyone.
It reminds us that in the middle of life’s “valleys” — problems, pain, and low places — Jesus is still beautiful and near.
He described Jesus as our Comforter in times of pain, our Defence, our Protector, a wall of fire round about us, and our Satisfaction. He is the God who never leaves nor forsakes us, the gentle Saviour, the Lamb who cares for us. That is who Jesus is to us — a Friend who watches over us every moment, even without our request. He is fairer than ten thousand to our soul.
Yes, friends may have disappointed you, forsaken you, and neglected you. But Jesus is the best Friend you need. He will correct you gently, caution you with love, and show you care when you feel lonely.
All you need to do is involve Him in all you do. Call on Him when you are confused. Invite Him into your affairs, and you will enjoy the friendship relationship He offers.
God bless you and Good Morning.
