1. The great Physician now is near,
the sympathizing Jesus;
He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,
oh! hear the voice of Jesus.
Refrain:
Sweetest note in seraph song,
sweetest name on mortal tongue;
sweetest carol ever sung,
Jesus, blessed Jesus.
2. Your many sins are all forgiven,
oh! hear the voice of Jesus;
go on your way in peace to heaven,
and wear a crown with Jesus.
3. All glory to the risen Lamb!
I now believe in Jesus;
I love the blessed Savior's name,
I love the name of Jesus. [Refrain]
4. His name dispels my guilt and fear,
no other name but Jesus;
oh! how my soul delights to hear
the charming name of Jesus. [Refrain]
William Hunter was a preacher and hymn writer from New Jersey. He wrote over 2,000 hymns in his lifetime.
The title “The Great Physician” comes straight from the Bible. In Luke 5:31 Jesus said:
“They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.”
The people in Hunter’s day called Jesus “The Great Physician” because He heals both bodies and souls. And even till today, that is what the Name of Jesus specializes in — healing broken hearts and broken bodies.
Hunter wrote this hymn during a time when many people were dealing with sickness, sin, and discouragement after the Civil War. The message was simple and urgent:
Don’t suffer in silence. Jesus is near right now. He speaks to cheer the drooping heart, He forgives sin, and His name alone can chase away guilt and fear.
The chorus became the most loved part:
“Sweetest note in seraph song, sweetest name on mortal tongue; sweetest carol ever sung, Jesus, blessed Jesus.”
It was meant to be sung as a testimony — that once you truly believe, you can say “I now believe in Jesus” and “I love the name of Jesus.”
So the whole hymn is an invitation. Jesus the Great Physician is in the room. He is not far. He forgives, He heals, He gives peace, and He gives a crown.
This hymn still brings healing to anyone who believes in the Name of Jesus. No matter the sickness, the pain, or what brings tears and sorrow, “The Great Physician” is right beside you now. You don’t need to look anywhere else. Just believe in the Name of Jesus. Pick up the hymn, sing it, and feel His saving and healing power.
God bless you and Good Morning.
